St. Bernard Parish Field Trip

This trip has been a favorite of St. Bernard Parish schools because it introduces the students to many issues affecting the wetlands in their parish.
We begin the day at Shell Beach, on the shore of the Mississippi River Gulf Outlet.
The students learn the history of MRGO and how it has impacted the parish. We then travel to St. Bernard State Park near Caernarvon.
The students make comparisons between water samples and the organisms living in the water from Shell Beach and the Caernarvon areas.
They learn about the influence of salt water on the wetland habitats.
We round out the trip with a visit to the Caernarvon Freshwater Diversion Structure, which is designed to reduce the impact of saltwater intrusion on the wetlands of St. Bernard and Plaquemines Parishes.
