Cane Bayou Field Trips by Canoe

Situated near Mandeville on the north shore of Lake Pontchartrain, Cane Bayou is easily accessible to most people living in St. Tammany Parish and only a 45-minute drive from New Orleans.
Here the students may be introduced to five different habitats: upland forest, swamp, fresh marsh, intermediate marsh and submersed aquatic vegetation (grassbeds).
There is abundant wildlife to be observed in this diverse wetland area, which lies between Big Branch National Wildlife Refuge and Fontainebleau State Park.
Ospreys nest in old cypress trees and alligators frequent the bayou. There are many learning opportunities here in biology, physical and earth science.

Fontainebleau State Park Field Trip
We have frequently used Fontainebleau Park as a land based site for field trips.
Unfortunately, due to damage by Hurricane Katrina, this site is presently closed to day use.
We are hoping to be able to resume use in the near future.
